What is PBIS used for?

PBIS is a positive way to encourage student to have good behavior.  Good behavior is anything positive a student does; pick up trash without being asked, passing out papers, taking leadership roles in class, using good manners without being asked to… the list can go on!  The key is, students must be caught doing the right thing, not asked, not forced to behave.  If students are caught being good, following the rules of the school and classrooms, and being a good citizen of this school they receive a token. At Townsend Middle School we reward our student’s good citizenship with tokens.  Our tokens are in the form of tickets.

Any student that is enrolled at Townsend Middle School can have the chance to receive tickets!  If they are following the rules without being asked, being helpful and having good manners without being told to do so, or students behaving in a way that encourages others to do so; they can receive a ticket.

Any staff member who works at Townsend Middle School can give out our ticket tokens. This includes cafeteria staff, Custodians, and Office Staff.  Any faculty member may give out tickets, any core subject teachers, such as Science and Math, to Encore Teachers, such as Music and Art.

Any substitute teacher who is hired by Townsend Middle School can give out tickets to students.  It does not matter what subject or grade level they are subbing for, they are encouraged to give out tickets!  Substitutes should find a stack of tickets with their sub plans to give out to their excellently behaved students that day.  If they run out of tickets, etc. Substitutes are encouraged to report the excellent behavior to the classroom teacher when they return, or in their Sub report so the student is rewarded!

The tickets, though attractive, are not the only prize for great behavior!  Students collect tickets in order to turn in these tokens for greater rewards.  At Townsend Middle School we have many ways students may redeem their tokens!

Students may redeem tokens for TMS School Store items such as Pens, Bracelets, Backpacks, water bottles etc. The more tickets a student has, the better the item they may purchase, or the more items they can get!

Students can also save up their tickets for PBIS Celebrations! Once they have the predetermined amount of tickets, they can turn them in and attend PBIS sponsored events. These celebrations can be a movie event complete with movie snacks, PBIS Dances with fun activities, Carnivals with games and prizes.

PBIS works, we have seen it in our classrooms, hallways, and student commons areas.  We have seen Teachers and Staff effectively give students praise and encouragement. FOllowing the ideals outlined above, we work and teach in a safe environment conducive to learning because of the PBIS Program.
